Diet & lifestyle changes for piles, fissure and fistula

Simple everyday habits, from fibre and water to toilet posture, that ease symptoms and prevent recurrence.

Piles, fissures and fistulas are among the most common problems we see, and among the most under-treated, often because people feel embarrassed. The good news is that small changes in diet and daily routine make a big difference, both before and after treatment.

Eat more fibre, gradually

Aim for 25–30 grams of fibre a day from whole grains, lentils, green vegetables and fruit such as papaya, guava and banana. Increase slowly over a week to avoid bloating.

Drink enough water

Fibre needs water to work. Try to drink 8–10 glasses daily, more in summer. Limit tea, coffee and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.

Healthy toilet habits

  • Go when you feel the urge; do not hold it in.
  • Avoid straining or sitting for long periods (no phones in the toilet!).
  • Use a small footstool to raise your knees, which straightens the rectum.
  • Warm sitz baths for 10 minutes ease pain and spasm.

When to see a surgeon

If you notice bleeding, a lump that does not go back, persistent pain or discharge, get checked. Early treatment is simpler, and modern laser options make recovery quick and comfortable.
