Recovering after laparoscopic surgery: a practical guide

What to expect in the first days and weeks after keyhole surgery, and how to heal faster.

One of the biggest advantages of keyhole surgery is a quick recovery. Following a few simple steps helps you heal even faster and avoid complications.

The first 48 hours

  • Start walking a few hours after surgery; it prevents clots and helps bowel function.
  • Mild shoulder-tip pain is common from the gas used during surgery and settles in 1–2 days.
  • Take painkillers as prescribed, before the pain becomes strong.

Wound care

Keep dressings dry for 48 hours. After that you can shower normally; pat the wounds dry. Watch for redness, swelling or discharge.

Food and activity

Start with light meals and increase as tolerated. Avoid heavy lifting for 2–4 weeks (longer after hernia repair). Most people return to desk work within a week.

Follow-up

Attend your follow-up visit, usually after 7–10 days, so we can check your wounds and discuss any reports.
