Will a belt cure it? Is surgery risky? We clear up the most common misunderstandings about hernia.
Hernias are very common, yet many myths stop people from getting timely treatment. Let us look at the facts.
Myth 1: A hernia belt will cure it
A truss may hold the bulge temporarily but does not repair the weakness. The hernia usually grows over time.
Myth 2: Only heavy lifters get hernias
Chronic cough, constipation, pregnancy, obesity and previous surgery are all common causes, and some people are simply born with a weak spot.
Myth 3: Surgery means weeks in bed
With modern mesh repair, especially laparoscopic, most people walk the same day and return to light work within a week.
Myth 4: It is safe to wait forever
A hernia can become trapped (incarcerated) and cut off blood supply to the bowel, which is a surgical emergency. Planned repair is far safer.
Myth 5: Hernias always come back
With proper tension-free mesh repair, recurrence rates are very low.
